Protecting Your Coins from PVC Damage and Humidity
Coins are far more durable than paper or textiles, which can lull collectors into thinking storage barely matters. It matters a great deal — just on a longer timescale. The damage that ruins a coin’s surface is almost always slow and preventable, caused by a small number of well-understood culprits.
The trouble with soft vinyl holders
For decades, the cheapest and most common coin holders were soft, flexible vinyl flips, prized for being inexpensive and easy to handle. The problem is the plastic itself: many of these flips are made from polyvinyl chloride (PVC), which is chemically unstable over time and releases plasticizer compounds as it ages. Those compounds migrate onto a coin’s surface and react with it, producing a sticky, greenish residue that collectors universally call “PVC damage” or, less formally, “green slime.”
Left long enough, this residue can etch into the coin’s surface permanently, leaving pitting or discoloration that no amount of careful handling afterward can undo. The fix is straightforward: avoid soft PVC-based vinyl flips entirely for anything beyond the shortest-term handling, and if you find an older coin that’s been sitting in one for years, remove it and gently address the residue promptly, before it has a chance to etch in.
What to use instead
The archival-safe alternative to PVC flips is Mylar, a chemically stable, inert plastic that doesn’t off-gas or react with metal over time. Mylar sleeves and pages are the standard for album inserts, and rigid holders — cardboard 2x2 flips with a stapled or folded closure, or hard plastic capsules — are generally made from more stable materials than the old soft vinyl style. When in doubt, look for holders explicitly labeled “PVC-free” or “archival safe.”
Humidity and slow corrosion
Beyond plastic chemistry, ambient humidity is the other major long-term threat. Metal reacts with moisture in the air, and different coin metals respond differently: copper and copper alloys are particularly prone to developing spots, streaks, or a green patina called verdigris when kept in a humid environment, while silver more commonly darkens through tarnish caused by trace sulfur compounds in the air, a process that humidity can accelerate.
A commonly cited target for metal storage is somewhere in the range of 35% to 50% relative humidity — dry enough to slow these reactions meaningfully, without going so dry that other storage materials, like old paper holders, become brittle. A small digital hygrometer placed inside a storage box, safe, or display case is an inexpensive way to actually know your storage humidity rather than guess at it.
Desiccants and sealed storage
Silica gel is the standard desiccant for coin storage: small packets of silica beads that absorb moisture from the air inside a sealed or reasonably sealed container. Silica gel needs periodic recharging (typically by gentle, low heat) or replacement once it’s saturated, so pair it with that hygrometer to know when it’s time, rather than assuming a packet dropped in years ago is still doing its job.
Handling: the everyday habit that matters most
The single easiest habit to adopt is also the cheapest: handle coins by their edges, and use clean, lint-free cotton gloves for anything beyond quick, casual handling. Bare fingers leave oils and salts on a coin’s surface that can cause fingerprint-shaped toning to develop over time, sometimes not becoming visible for months or years after the contact. It costs nothing to develop the habit of picking a coin up by its rim, and it’s one of the few storage precautions that has zero downside.
Leave the cleaning alone
It bears repeating clearly: don’t clean coins. Nearly every home cleaning method — polishes, abrasives, even many chemical dips — permanently alters a coin’s original surface in ways that are visible to any experienced collector and can’t be undone. A coin’s natural, undisturbed surface, wear and all, is part of its authentic condition. If a coin genuinely needs conservation work, that’s a job for a professional conservator, not a home remedy.
None of this is complicated or expensive to get right. Stable, inert holders; moderate humidity with a way to actually measure it; clean-glove handling; and a firm rule against home cleaning will protect a collection for decades with very little ongoing effort.
