What the Sheldon Scale Actually Measures (and What It Doesn't)
It’s easy to treat a coin’s grade as a single, all-purpose quality score — a bigger number sounds like a better coin, full stop. That instinct isn’t wrong exactly, but it skips over what the number is actually built from, and it invites a much bigger mistake: assuming the grade tells you something about a coin’s scarcity, authenticity, or price. It doesn’t, and it was never designed to. Walking through the scale’s own reference data makes both halves of that clear — what the number does encode, and the hard boundary around what it doesn’t.
Thirty recognized points, not seventy
The Coin Grade Guide tool on this site is built directly on the same list of officially recognized Sheldon grade points that graders actually use. Pull that list and count it, and you get exactly 30 numbers: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, 50, 53, 55, 58, and then every whole number from 60 through 70. That’s not a rounding error or an incomplete table — it’s the actual, deliberate structure of the scale. Below Mint State, the numbers skip around because each recognized point marks a genuinely distinct, agreed-upon wear stage, and cramming in every integer between them wouldn’t add any real information a grader could reliably distinguish. From 60 upward, every integer is used because Mint State and Proof coins are separated by much finer distinctions — marks, luster, strike — that really can support that level of granularity.
Walking the scale with real output
Running the grade guide’s own gradeInfo() function across a spread of points shows exactly what changes as the number climbs, in the tool’s own words rather than a paraphrase:
- G-4 (Good): “The overall design is clear, but fine detail is worn away and the rim may be worn into the lettering.”
- F-12 (Fine): “Moderate to considerable even wear, but the entire design is fully visible with some detail remaining.”
- VF-20 (Very Fine): “Shows moderate wear on the high points, but all major and most minor details are visible.”
- XF-40 (Extremely Fine): “Light wear confined to the highest points of the design; most detail is sharp.”
- AU-58 (About Uncirculated): “The finest circulated grade — only the slightest friction on the highest points, with nearly full luster.”
- MS-63 (Mint State): “Uncirculated, choice, with some scattered marks but pleasing overall eye appeal.”
- MS-65 (Mint State): “Gem uncirculated — an attractive coin with full luster and only minor, scattered marks.”
- MS-70 (Mint State): “Perfect mint state — full original luster and no post-production marks visible even under magnification.”
Read in sequence, the language itself tells you what’s actually being tracked. From G-4 through AU-58, every description is about wear — how much of the original design detail has been rubbed away by circulation, and how far up the coin that wear has crept. The moment the scale crosses into Mint State at 60, wear disappears from the vocabulary entirely and a completely different set of criteria takes over: the number and severity of contact marks, how complete and sharp the strike came out, and overall eye appeal. That’s the scale’s actual internal logic — two different measuring sticks joined at one number line, wear below 60 and mint-state quality at and above it.
The proof designation is a manufacturing fact, not a higher grade
Calling gradeInfo(65, { proof: true }) instead of the default business-strike call returns a “PR-65” abbreviation with the description “A gem proof — an attractive coin with full luster and only minor, scattered marks” — the same underlying quality bar as MS-65, just relabeled to reflect that the coin was manufactured as a proof rather than a business strike. The same holds at the top of the scale: gradeInfo(70, { proof: true }) returns “PR-70,” described as “Perfect proof — full original luster and no post-production marks visible even under magnification,” word-for-word the same standard as a business-strike MS-70. A PR-70 isn’t a “better” grade than an MS-70 in any objective sense; the prefix simply tells you which manufacturing process produced the coin, which is exactly why the prefix changes but the numeric bar it has to clear does not.
What the number was never built to say
None of the 30 recognized points, and nothing in how a grader arrives at one, has anything to do with three things collectors frequently, and mistakenly, read into a grade:
- Authenticity. Grading assumes the coin in hand is genuine and assesses its condition on that assumption. A convincing counterfeit could, in principle, be handed to a grader and described in wear terms just like a genuine piece — grading is not an authentication step, and a grade is not a certificate that a coin is real.
- Rarity. A grade says nothing about how many examples of that coin exist today. - Price. Nothing in the Sheldon scale’s vocabulary references money, demand, or a market of any kind. What any given graded coin might sell for depends on scarcity, demand, and a buyer’s own judgment on a given day — questions this site doesn’t answer, by design.
Collapsing any of those three into “the grade” is the single most common conceptual mistake newcomers make with the Sheldon scale, and it’s worth actively unlearning early. A grade is condition, precisely and only.
Why a reference table can describe a grade but never assign one
Everything above came from calling a function that looks up a fixed, published description for a specific number — exactly the kind of lookup a printed reference chart can do too. What no chart, tool, or written description can do is the other direction: start from an actual physical coin and output the correct number. That requires examining real wear, real marks, real luster, and real strike quality on the specific piece in hand, weighing them against each other the way years of training teach a grader to, which is precisely the judgment call third-party grading services exist to make. Use a reference like this one to learn what a grade name promises before you ever submit a coin, or to understand a grade you’ve already been given — not as a way to skip the actual grading step.
A short glossary behind the descriptions
A handful of terms recur throughout every grade description above, and they’re worth defining plainly rather than absorbing by context alone:
- Luster — the specific sheen a coin’s surface shows fresh from striking, caused by microscopic metal flow lines radiating out from the strike. Wear flattens and dulls luster first, which is exactly why its presence or absence is one of the clearest tells between a lightly circulated coin and a genuinely uncirculated one.
- Contact marks — small nicks and scuffs picked up from ordinary contact with other coins and equipment during minting, bagging, and shipping, distinct from wear caused by circulation. Every Mint State grade above 60 is largely a running tally of how few, and how inconspicuous, these marks are.
- Strike — how completely and sharply the design transferred from the dies into the metal at the moment of striking. A weak strike can leave a technically mark-free, uncirculated coin looking soft or mushy in its finer details, independent of any wear or marks at all.
- Eye appeal — the overall, somewhat holistic visual impression a coin makes, considering color, luster, strike, and marks together rather than any single factor in isolation. It’s the most explicitly judgment-based part of the whole system, and the main reason two technically similar coins can still land a point or two apart.
- Details holder — what a third-party grading service issues instead of a numeric grade when a coin has been cleaned, damaged, or otherwise altered in a way that falls outside the normal wear-and-marks system entirely. A details holder still names the underlying problem (“cleaned,” “damaged,” “environmental damage”) but withholds the 1-to-70 number altogether, because that coin’s surface no longer represents an honest read of its original condition.
How grading connects to the rest of this site
The Sheldon scale is deliberately kept in its own lane here, but it isn’t collected in isolation from everything else this site covers. A coin’s grade, its estimated scarcity, and its metal composition are three genuinely separate questions, each with its own dedicated reference — this grade guide, the rarity scale lookup, and the metal weight calculator, respectively — and keeping them separate is the whole point. Treating them as one blended “how good is this coin” score is exactly the confusion that leads collectors astray, and it’s worth resisting even when it would be more convenient to compress three answers into one number. Learn to answer each question on its own terms, with its own reference, and the whole hobby gets noticeably easier to reason about.
